Ever since I posted about the Sony ear buds, I had people asking me what to do if they wanted to rock a retro look, what to do if their ear canal is too small, or just dont like to put things in the holes….(altho, im sure most likes putting things in diff holes…).   If any of these apply to you, I will give you a recommendation for a head phone.

Remember those things? big things that goes around your head with big ear muffs at the end of it?  Yes, those things still exist and hipsters aren’t the only ones that still rock them (in fact, wearing headphones just for the looks of them are the dumbest things to do).  The biggest reason to rock headphones is the sound quality.  whether its earbuds, or headphones, essentially they are a small sets of speakers for personal listening.  And like conventional speakers, bigger the driving magnet and the woofers, richer the sound can be.

Compared to ear buds, headphones have much wider range of prices and qualities.  Considering that most of wont be looking at the $1000 set of headphones, I will point out a set that is considered one of the best performance on a budget.  Keep in mind that chasing quality sound can be an expensive journey, so avg ipod users with the white ear buds (refer to my last post) may think that these are WAYYY expensive, but this is an entry model to head phones, so don’t be a wallet tight jackass.

The headphone that I want to talk to about are the Grado SR-60. www.gradolabs.com.

These are a oldie, but a goodie.  The design doesn’t get any more retro than these.  But don’t let the looks fool you, no matter where you read the reviews, they universally get praised for its sound quality, and any complaints usually pertain to non-aural qualities of the phones.

Introduced in early 90’s, these these SR-60 have been made by a small family company operated by John Grado out of Brooklyn, NY.  The SR-60 have been considered a set that trumps even those that cost twice as much from the beginning.  Over 15 years later, this still holds true; providing the most full bodied sound in its class, bass, mids, treble are all clearly pronounced.  It is said that these are like a gateway drug into the expensive and exhausting world of hi-fi for many future audiophiles.  But if you are willing to cope with the fact that you may be sucked into the wallet emptying hi-fi culture, go get yourself some of these, you’ll never want to listen to shitty sound ever again.   Usual complaints are the fitting of the ear cup, which for some people can be uncomfortable.  And these do have open cup design, so I wouldn’t recommend these for quite libraries or packed subways since while you will experience the sound quality heaven, the person next to you will hear exactly what you are listening to.

Most genres of music can be improved with set of these, as they are pretty neutrally balanced between all spectrum of sound.
